The sun and you

It is summer time 🙂 The sun’s  out and probably so are you. Enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. Taking a hike through the wilderness or laying on the beach somewhere exotic.

As we are spending more days outdoor and the sun is shining on us, most of us forget one important thing, sunscreen. Yet while doing our everyday things, we are still exposed to the harsh rays of the sun that can have consequences down the line.

Think about that time you were driving to work and got stuck in traffic with your arm exposed to the window and the next day you woke up to some interesting tan lines.

SPF Sun Protection Factor – How long can I stay in the sun?

We have all heard of it and seen it everywhere, but what exactly does it mean? Well, think how long it takes for your unprotected skin starts to reddening, in 10 minutes?  In theory, if you use an SPF 10 sunscreen it will take 10 times longer to start turning red.

However, do remember you do need to continue application throughout the day, especially if you are sweating a lot or jump in the water to cool down. Reapply every 2 hours.

What should you look for in a sunscreen?

There are two main types of active ingredients used to protect your skin from the UV rays. Chemical ingredients such as avobenzone and benzophenone, work by absorbing UV, reducing its penetration into the skin, whereas physical ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide stay on top of the skin and deflect UV rays. Many sunscreens available today combine chemical and physical ingredients.

However, some sunscreen causes damage to the beautiful coral reefs. Sunblocks containing oxybenzone and octinoxate while protecting our skin causes bleaching to the colorful reefs. That is why, if you plan on going swimming in the ocean, consider purchasing a sunscreen without these active ingredients.

How else can I protect my skin?

Apart from sunscreen try:

  1. Remain out of the sun at its peak 11 am – 3 pm
  2. Wear protective clothing or specialized UV clothing
  3. Use after-sun care; for extra cooling but the after-sun cream in the refrigerator

Have a wonderful summer and remember to keep protected
